Joe Colonna

Joe Colonna is a partner in Appleseed and is well known on both the provider and supplier sides of the healthcare industry, most recently serving as the Director of the Coastal Cooperative of New Jersey, LLC, The New Jersey Based cooperative has a portfolio of over $70 million dollars in contracts and in less then 24 months reduced operating costs by $12 million dollars for its member/owners.

Prior to this, Mr. Colonna served as the President and CEO of Strategic Initiatives in Healthcare, LLC (SIH). In this capacity he assisted the owner of SIH, William J. McFaul, in the creation of a new kind of consulting and knowledge sharing company, including extensive research into what is and what is not working in leadership development in healthcare. The development of SIH included a specific and extensive focus on supply chain management in healthcare..

His blend of healthcare expense control expertise includes seven years as a Vice President for Shared Services Healthcare in Atlanta, GA, one of the five largest voluntary group purchasing programs in the country. During this period, he oversaw the group purchasing program for hospitals, developed an alternate-site volume purchasing program, and established a consulting service for expense control and supply chain services. Prior to his work in the shared services and group purchasing industry, Mr. Colonna worked for Owen Healthcare, Inc, the largest contracted management services company in the United States, for five years as a supply chain/materials management director. He has also worked with international charities that distribute medical supplies and equipment to third world countries. This work included tours of health systems in Armenia and the country of Georgia.

Mr. Colonna is a member of the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management and the Professional Society of Group Purchasing Executives. In addition to making several presentations at professional society meetings, he has published numerous articles pertaining to healthcare expense control and leadership development. He has made a major contribution to the purchasing and materials management profession by co-creating and presenting educational programs throughout the U.S. Mr. Colonna also served on the Editorial Board for First Moves and previously as a member of NCI’s Board of Advisors. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of Healthcare Purchasing News.
